Acronyms used by Sunrise Science Products

Most questions about how to purchase defined yeast media can be answered by this formula:

YNB+Nitrogen+Sugar+Amino Acids = Synthetic Defined Media (SD/SDA)

YNB+Nitrogen+Sugar = Dropout Base (DOB/DOBA)

Dropout Base + Amino Acids = Synthetic Defined Media (SD/SDA)

"YNB+Nitrogen": This can be confusing, because different companies define "YNB" differently. At Sunrise Science Products, we define "YNB" as the salts, vitamins and trace elements that form a base to which nitrogen can be added. Unless our product name says "+Nitrogen", there is no nitrogen in the product. Read other company labels carefully to be sure you are replacing the item correctly with ours.

"Sugar": Typically, this is glucose/dextrose. We also carry dropout bases (DOB) that use galactose, raffinose, or both instead of glucose. If you need a different sugar, let us know.

"Amino Acids": The most common two mixtures we carry are the CSM and SC amino acid mixtures. We also carry HSM and BSM mixtures, and can make custom versions also. Each type of mixture contains amino acids in varying concentrations, and not all may be present in each mixture. Click here for the recipes.

"Complete Synthetic Defined Media": At Sunrise Science Products, our complete synthetic defined media is named "SD" (or "SDA" if it contains agar). The SD/SDA formulations use our standard YNB, nitrogen, glucose, and the CSM version of amino acid mixture.

"Dropout Base": At Sunrise Science Products, dropout bases are named "DOB" (or "DOBA" if it contains agar). The DOB/DOBA formulations use our standard YNB, nitrogen and glucose. We also have DOB/DOBA formulations with Raffinose, Galactose, or both.

Where is your yeast media made?

We mix and mill all yeast media formulations right here in our building; we do not re-label media from other companies. We follow stringent manufacturing and quality guidelines, and only use raw materials from tested, reputable sources.

Will you make media for yeast other than S. cerevisiae and S. pombe?
